Duolingo
Duolingo is one of the most popular and fun ways to learn a new language, including German! Since its launch in 2011 by Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker, the app has transformed language learning with its easy-to-use design and playful, game-like features, making it super accessible to everyone. Best of all, it's free, so anyone can start learning, no matter their budget.
One of the things that makes Duolingo so enjoyable is its gamified approach. Lessons are broken down into bite-sized tasks, and you'll get to practice reading, writing, listening, and even speaking in a way that feels less like studying and more like playing a game. You’ll earn points, build streaks, and collect fun virtual rewards, like "lingots" (Duolingo’s currency), which you can spend on in-app perks. This approach helps keep you motivated, making learning feel fun and rewarding.
Duolingo uses a learning technique called spaced repetition, which helps you remember what you’ve learned by showing you new words and concepts at just the right time. As you progress, the app introduces more challenging grammar and vocabulary while reinforcing what you’ve already mastered. While it might not give you complete fluency, Duolingo is fantastic for building a strong foundation in the German language.
The app is free, but if you want to unlock extra features like offline access or get rid of ads, there’s also a premium option called Duolingo Plus. And if you're interested in formal tests, Duolingo has the Duolingo English Test, a more affordable and convenient option compared to tests like TOEFL or IELTS.
While Duolingo might not cover everything, it’s a great and easy way to dive into learning German. We suggest making it a part of your daily routine—just 15 minutes a day can take you a long way in no time!
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Set in the fantasy world of Azeroth, players create characters from various races and classes, exploring vast landscapes, completing quests, battling monsters, and engaging in player-vs-player combat.
One aspect of WoW for language learners is the blend of written and spoken communication. Players read quest story lines, chat messages, listen to voice communications through platforms like Discord, and constantly react to instructions. This combination of visual, auditory, and practical language use creates an ideal environment for practice. Since it all happens in real-time, there is an element of pressure that pushes players to respond quickly and efficiently. While not a formal classroom, WoW provides a natural motivation to learn as part of the gaming experience.
World of Warcraft is a very text based game, making it an excellent challenging tool for advanced language learners. Not only this, the global community within WoW provides a space where people from all over the world can communicate, strategize, and form friendships.
